Mozilla Announces Firefox Extended Support Release
Mozilla announced today that it would be offering a so-called Extended Support Release (or ESR) for Firefox to ease the pain of enterprises, universities, and other users put off by the company's earlier decision to switch to a rapid release cycle for Firefox. The ESR will be updated to a new major version about once a year, and then maintained with security patches until the next ESR, much as Firefox 3.6 has been maintained since Firefox 4's release. The first ESR should be Firefox 10, which is due on January 31 - six weeks after the stable release of Firefox 9.
The plan as currently proposed is to support each ESR for nine Firefox release cycles, which at the current rate of a new release every six weeks ends up being about 54 weeks. For each major release of Firefox, the ESR build will receive a batch of security updates and bugfixes (so, FIrefox 11 would bring Firefox 10.01, Firefox 14 would bring Firefox 10.04, and etc.) without making changes to the rendering engine or major features - extensions that break in major version updates should also continue working in the ESR when it is updated. As each new ESR is introduced, the previous ESR will receive 6-12 more weeks of official support before being discontinued.
The ESR proposal was created by Mozilla's Enterprise User Working Group, and will hopefully be the first step toward remedying Firefox's historically poor enterprise support - Internet Explorer and Chrome both offer MSI installers and Group Policy controls for use by Active Directory administrators who need to keep their users' browsers locked down and up-to-date.

HP Unveils New Glassy Ultrabook with Killer Looks and Innovative Features
HP unveiled its new Envy 14 Spectre ultrabook that will be running on the upcoming Ivy Bridge processors that were earlier demoed by Intel. The HP Spectre is definitely a looker. It sports a glossy mid-night black Gorilla-glass lid, is 20 mm thin, and features a 14 inch screen with super thin bezel and Radiance display. HP insists that the glass lid will not compromise the durability of the ultrabook.
Configuration-wise the Spectre is a pretty standard affair with Core i5-2467M CPU and 4 GB of RAM. The battery is said to last for nine hours. Interested users will have the option of upgrading to 256 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM. Typical HP goodies such as impactful speakers with Beats technology, and CoolSense are also present. HP has even thrown in free copies of Photoshop and Premiere Elements 10, along with a two-year subscription to Norton Internet Security. The other differentiating feature of the Spectre comes courtesy of the Intel Ivy Bridge processor that includes NFC support.
The Spectre is drool worthy, but it will definitely make your wallet a lot lighter. Priced at $1,399.99, the Spectre is more expensive than the MacBook Air that is likely to be its biggest competitor. The Spectre will launch in the states on Feb 8, and go on sale in Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom in early March.
Ubuntu TV- TV for Human Beings, Revealed at CES 2012
Canonical has recently revealed a concept for a fully featured TV application, based on Ubuntu. It is known as the Ubuntu TV, and has been revealed at CES 2012. Ubuntu TV competes directly with Google TV in its attempt to redefine the entertainment experience on television. It has some amazing features and the first commercial appearance of the TV is expected by the end of this year.

In an interview with PC Pro, Canonical CEO Jane Silber says,
It is a simple viewing experience for online video, both your own and routed over the internet. OEMs and ODMs are increasingly wary of the walled garden [approach] that certainly Apple takes – and increasingly Google, although it is much more open than Apple. We see a lot of demand for a neutral player.
Jane Silber knows Canonical is up against Google and Apple with this technology, and therefore, it are offering the software free of charge to gain a competitive edge. The source code for Ubuntu TV will be released later today, allowing developers to customize and modify it, as they want. Jane Silber takes pride in saying “Ubuntu TV will provide viewers with a neutral player”.
Overview
Ubuntu TV will let you stream media content like music, videos an photos from your PC to your TV. You can search, watch, record and play streaming videos. It will also allow media sharing with portable devices using Ubuntu One. You can also share your screen with tablets and smartphones. Like the Software Center in Ubuntu, Ubuntu TV will have an online store where developers can submit their apps for Ubuntu TV. Besides, the application will be controlled with a smartphone or with a TV remote.
Ubuntu TV for Content Providers and Hardware manufacturer
Canonical is calling the technology a Smart TV. Canonical will need to partner with OEMs to enter into production with this new product. This can be an excellent deal for TV manufacturers, now that global content distribution rules, OS development and software engineering will be handled by Canonical completely.
Verdict
This is Canonical’s first attempt to move beyond the PC. However, this technology of smart TV has only seen sluggish growth so far, and there is definitely something wrong with the feeble attempts that everyone is making at enriching our TV viewing experience. In spite of a strong marketing force, Google TV has not reached many houses yet.
Initial markets of interest for this product will be the US and China. Canonical plans to extend it to the UK later. However, these markets will prove to be profitable only when Canonical makes local-content deals.

Ubuntu has unveiled its next technology, which aims at enriching our TV viewing experience. This product competes with the likes of Google TV and Samsung Smart TV, and it is called the Ubuntu TV. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor coming to TVs, notebooks, and smartphones early this year
Qualcomm took the stage at the Consumer Electronics Show on Tuesday to highlight the company’s Snapdragon processor line. “Our latest S4 series Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets will set the bar higher,” said Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs. Apple’s next-generation iPad 3 receives an early hands-on preview?
When Apple announced the iPhone 4S, users were upset that the device featured the same design as the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, it looks like Apple will continue this trend, with the upcoming iPad 3 resembling the iPad 2, according to iLounge who received hands-on time with what they are claiming is the unannounced device. “From the back, you could walk past this new iPad on display and have no idea that anything had changed,” said iLounge Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Horwitz. The iPad 3′s body is roughly 1mm thicker than its predecessor and the rear camera has become noticeably larger, resembling the iPhone 4S’s much-improved rear camera, sans LED flash. The front of the device featured no noticeable changes, although iLounge is reporting that the next-generation iPad will feature improved image and camera quality. Horwitz cautions that the device he played with seems to be around six months old, and if we know anything about Apple, it’s that their plans can change at the drop of a hat.

Moneto makes any Android smartphone an NFC device

Viewsonic announces ViewPad E70 tablet, delivers Android Ice Cream Sandwich for $170
Viewsonic announced another addition to the company’s ViewPad tablet line at the Consumer Electronics Show on Tuesday, the ViewPad E70. The 7-inch tablet runs Google’s latest operating system, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and features a 1GHz single-core processor, 4GB of storage, HDMI-out, and a front facing camera.
